1979 Mercruiser will not trim down...

I just purchased a 1979 Tiara with the mercruiser 260. I believe the stern drive is a an old pre alpha MR stern drive. The marina where I picked up the boat had just rebuilt the rams with new seals and 1 required a new cap and tube. The trim will go up, but will not trim down. There used to be trim sensors on the drive but one is missing now and the other one has the wires cut. I removed the trim motor and pump assembly and cleaned it out. I bled the system thinking that may be the problem. The motor works in both directions, so I don't believe the motor is the problem. I checked the reverse lock out valve, but am not sure if this has anything to do with the trim down function. I physically moved the reverse lockout valve to various positions, but there was no difference. I'm still not sure if it works. Can it be bypassed for troubleshooting purposes? I checked the hydraulic lines from the transom to the trim actuators, but do not know if they are properly connected. There are two lines to each actuator and currently the forward lines go to the forward ports on the hydraulic manifold located at the base of the drive and the aft actuator lines go to the aft ports on the manifold. Is this correct? I would appreciate any input from other members of the forum to help me resolve this problem.<br /><br />Thanks

I had the same problem and it was a bad ram.<br /><br />Remove the rear pin going thru both cylinders and see which one does not go back down.<br /><br />it is most likely the rear bushing on the trim cylinder has siezed up. You have to remove the end bushing and either run a .750 reamer through the bushing and replace the o-rings or replace the rear bushing

I removed both rams from the anchor pin and neither one goes back. I can crack the hydraulic lines on the actuators and the drive comes back down. Could the marina have incorrectly assembled the rams after the rebuild? Is there a check valve/ball inside the rams causing the problem?

Sure is possible.... When you bled the lines did you see juice and bubbles? Did you bleed per the elaborate procedure in the manual?<br /><br />Here is a link to rebuild kits and pictures of all the parts. He is also the guy who provided the advice to me that I just passed on to you:<br /><br /> http://www.mercstuff.com/trimcylparts.htm

I don't have a manual, but just purchased one on ebay, so the answer is no I didn't follow the correct bleeding procedure.<br />Thanks for the link. I'll check it out...

Do you have a copy of the bleeding procedures?

There is a very definite bleeding procdure and you can find it in the Seloc manual. Not fun either! If it weren't so long and detailed I'd type it here for you but it is just too long. Sorry.<br /><br />I'd consider bringing it back to the marina since they just did the work. Clearly the didn't even test it and you can't help but do so when you're bleeding them.

I am having the same problem but I do have a manual and I followed the bleeding procedure. I just bought a new pump and hoses and rebuiolt the rams but the problem remains any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
The boat is a 1979 wellcraft and the I/O is a mercruiser alpha one

Re: 1979 Mercruiser will not trim down...

I just had a similar problem and it turned out to be a defective cylinder.

My trim was working fine but 1 cylinder was leaking. I replaced the leaking cylinder with a used 1.

The drive would go up fine but would not go down.

Even when I disconnected the end of the cylinders from the drive neither would retract.

I put on another cylinder and the trim/tilt worked great.

OLD 2004 thread

Trigger 29, best to start a new thread with your question. Since many people only read the original post and answer it, instead of reading your question 16 replies later. Hard to tell who's question mark is answering.
