I would recommend cleaning once a year with soapy water and blowing it dry with compressed air. You could also use carb cleaner. I used a carb cleaning solution called Chem-Dip, worked great. Soaked it overnight, rinsed with water and blew it dry with compressed air. It is pretty important to clean, if it gets dirty it will restrict air flow to the engine, thus reducing performance.
