1999 Ficht 200 - Check engine light into SLOW mode

The past few trips out one of my 99 Ficht 200's when I slowly accelerate or deaccelerate through the 3,000 rpm to 4,200 rpm range will start to run rough almost like it is getting choked, check engine light and alarm comes on and it goes into SLOW mode. I simply turn it off, the check engine light resets and I can restart it and get going again. When I am running the motor over 4,200rpm the issue does not occur and it runs fine, also no issue if I quickly back it down below 3,000rpm.

I have the diagnostics software and ran it today to check the faults however there are none stored. This event has happened 10 plus times in the past two trips and not one code was stored? The EMM is remanufactured and after every use the engines battery is switched off, will any of this effect a fault being stored and me being able to read it? My Evinrude tech tells me no however I am ready to have the engine hooked up while the check engine light is on and we are out running to possibly read it then.

After reading a few other forums and threads i have measured the resistance of the Throttle position sensor (TPS) testing it and it has checked out "ok". My second assumption is "EMM above temperature" as the water pressure according to the pressure gauge is 3psi at idle and 7 psi at 4,500 rpm. This is lower than I remember. The other twin ficht is 5psi at idle and 10-13 psi at 4,500 rpm. I will be checking the water cooling hoses throughout the motor and EMM tomorrow however any other ideas?

It could be either the water pump is getting weak or the thermostats need to be replaced. If both are original now would be a good time to do it. When you go above 4500 rpm the water pressure is forcing open the bypass valve which is why you don't get the over heating alarm.

Thanks hidef, Since I cannot get any kind of fault code off the EMM I am going to try to again this morning, even if it means running the boat with diagnostics cable hooked up while the alarm is going off.

The t-stats and waterpump were new beginning of the last season( so the previous owner) tells me. I will pull them anyway and trace a few cooling hoses for debris. Last step would be to pull the boat out of the water and do the water pump.

Thanks again,

Ben

You might also have an overly eager temp sensor too. Those can removed and tested too. Have you checked the head temps when the alarm sounds?

I kept the battery switch on since it through the codes and was able to hook up my diag. Software anf the codes stored. Twl codes for throttle postion sensor. Malfuntion and over range. Got the part and will install this evening. Ill let you know how it goes.

Thanks

Replaced the faulty TPS and the engine ran great on this morning's shakedown run. Thanks!
