I have a 120hp outboard force on a 17' Bayliner. It will not run with the cover on but will run fine with it off. I was told it was the exhaust gasket, but im not sure where it is located or how to change it. I think I could change it if I knew where it was.

Would be good if you had stated the year engine. Assuming it is before 1994, at the rear of the engine, below the head there is a rubber bellows. Sometimes they are not seated in the rear shroud and sometimes they are broken. Check that first.

After 1994, I forget whether or not they have the bellows.

Check the foam sound deadening insulation on the inside of the cowling. Sounds stupid but this happened to me. The foam sucked tight against the carburetors and choked the engine. Worth a look.

When it dies, does it suddenly stop, as if you turned the key off? Or, does it stop slowly, like it's not getting air/fuel?
