Hi, i have a 1971 johnson 60esl71c, when I started the motor, it started up, but then the control assembly stated smoking, i opened it up and found the wires casing to the ignition switch were somewhat melted, the swich was hot, would a new ignition switch take care of this or is there something else that might be going on

You must have a short to ground, use a meter and check all the wires for a short. A switch could be the culpret, but you need to check the wires.

Second that , wires in a boat are exposet to much harsher conditions than in a car , heat, cold, moisture, uv sunlight, oils etc that rapidly dry and crack insulation as well as the bouncing of the boat on a trailer and on rough water or from repetitive turns can cause a wire to chafe. Also boats tend to be assembled with poorer fit and finish with more rough edges on aluminum holes and fiberglass consoles. All lead to sparky sparky!
