We have put in new plugs and cleaned the carb. We had it on the lake today and it started and ran but the engine would race up and down on it's on and it finally quit and wouldn't start back, turns over and is fireing but won't start. Any ideas?????:(

How did you clean the carb? It sounds a bit like lean surge. May be junk in the fuel passages or a float problem. It could be water in the fuel also.

My dad seems to think its not getting enough fire, so we put in new coil and still won't start. We filled up with high test gas and cleaned the carb and still no luck. There is there way to check the little piece that goes under the distrubitor Ignitor II think it may be the problem but hate to buy one if it's not.

I replaced the points on my 1980 470 with an electronic module. That helped ignition. They are usually trouble free after installing them correctly. You can also change the cap and rotor as they are not too expensive and do fail over time.
RPM surging would not usually be related to ignition though. You might want to start by changing out any fuel filters. Premium fuel won't hurt but it's not necessary with that engine.

Ok, the engine is chugging or is it turning over but not firing?

Try taking off the fuel line to the carb and put the end into a glass jar. crank the engine a couple of turn to be sure that there is adequate fuel being pumped to the carb.
Did you replace the fuel filter? if it's clogged it would sputter as well.
