I'm having a problem with plug fouling after putting a new powerhead on and adding some boyesen reeds and a set of 50 hp carbs. I've checked the timing and it's good, the correct champion plugs are in it. The air/fuel screw is at it's best setting, 2.25 turns out. The carbs are the early style vs. the newer style. It runs great until I idle for a period of time. It seems to load up with fuel and starts to missfire. I can put it in neutral and rev it up a few times and it clears up but then comes back if I keep idling along. The number on the carbs is 432989 on both. I've looked everywhere and can't find this carb. number. I'm curious if the low speed jet may be too big?

There is more to making a 40 into a 50 than carburetors.

2 1/2 turns out, on the low speed jets, sounds a bit rich to me.

DJ, what's the rest on making a 40 into a 50? The only differences I saw were the carbs and reeds.

This is one reason I dont troll with bigger motors. Get a 4 to 6hp kicker, Both motors are plumed together with the exception of 6hp is pull start. Some reasons are, it's more fuel efficient, easier and more cost effective to work on, quieter and I don't fowl plugs in big motor due to prolonged idling. But I am interested how to make a 50hp out of my 40 although the 40hp pushes me boat pretty well! Happy Boating!

Are you using the 50 HP leaf plate assembly? Did you switch the head to the 50 HP head

This is my only motor on a 1448 tunnel jon boat.

I am using the leaf plates from the 50 but the reeds are boyesen reeds. The head is the 40 head.

youll have to port the engine, get the 50's exaust cover, in the end youd be better off buying a 50hp

With that said, the powerhead I put on two months ago is from a 50hp Johnson. The 40, 48, 50's that year all shared the same crank, rods, pistons, blocks. What porting would I have to do if all of that is the same? The 50 exhaust cover is on there right now.

Yes, the power heads are the same and lower units will interchange.

To answer your question, the jets may be too big if you are running the 40 HP head.
