Qd-15

I recently inherited a 10hp QD-15 that my father in law bought new in 1954.
Rumor has it that the engine has less than 10 hours. It is obvious that the engine was well taken care of. The green is still bright under the cowling as well as on the exterior.
However the engine and tank have been in his shed and unused since the 70's.
I have cleaned the engine and tank with soap and water.Replaced all fuel lines and spark plugs. My fuel mix is 24:1 with Johnson 2cycle marine oil. It takes just a couple of pumps on the fuel primer to fill the carb and bowl and pressurize the tank.
I have disassembled the carb and cleaned, and used Johnson kit #439071 which came with a new float.
Now to my problem!
The engine will start and run only a few seconds. I have the original manual, and have set the High and low speed needles accordingly.
I learned that I can start the engine in gear, and therefore at a higher throttle setting, and managed to set the needles as well as I can.
The engine still stumbles and dies at low rpm settings.
I am sure I am missing something in all of this. I solicit and encourage all opinions and recomendations.
Thanks in advance

Re: Qd-15

When you cleaned the carb, did you remove the welsh plug on top of the carb and clean the passages inside?

Did you check the coils under the flywheel? 99% chance they have failed with age. You need to pull the pull starter off and then remove the access port and look in at the 2 coils. If they are cracked at all, sweaty or old looking replace em. If they have not been replace they will need to be. They fail with age not use and if they are original they are toast.

Re: Qd-15

No I did not. Thought I could get by without doing that.
I did notice the two plugs as you mention.what is under the plugs?
What is the procedure for r&r?

Re: Qd-15

My manual calls for a slow speed setting of 1 1/4 turn rich, and 1/3 turn on the high speed needle.
I tried various settings around these.
I did see elsewhere of a high speed setting of 1 1/4 rich.

Re: Qd-15

I use static settings of 1 1/4 turns out on the low speed and 3/4 turn on the high speed. These settings should get it started, but to fine tune it you should run the boat in the water.

Re: Qd-15

I have not checked the coils, and am sure they are original.
Now that you mention it, I might not have been hitting on both cylinders.
Rpm did seem low at the start position.
Can you recommend where to purchase the coils?

Re: Qd-15

You can buy coils here at iboats. They're cheap. Around $20 each. Changing em will help a lot. And cleaning the carb fully. Pull the welch plug off, there's idle circuits in there. It needs to be clean.

Re: Qd-15

Thanks to all for the responses.
I will install new coils (and points while I'm there)
Also will r&r the expansion plug in the carb to clean the idle circuits.

Re: Qd-15

Thanks for all replies.I am installing new points/condenser and coils. (the original coils were horrible)
I removed the cam from the crank, and cleaned and greased it. It is spring loaded, Is there a secret, or am I missing a procedure to hold it down while adjusting the points and reinstalling the flywheel?
I hope I am expelling my problem correctly.
Thanks in advance.
