I want to check and likely replace the impeller on my newly acquired '86 9.9 two stroke. I have dropped the lower case however it will only come down an inch or so. What do I need to do to get the case free to inspect the impeller? I saw a similar thread on a newer motor but cannot find it at the present time. Help? Thank you.

Did you unhook the shift shaft?

No, should I be able to figure out how to do this by looking at it? Should I break down and buy a manual? If so, Should I purchase a mercury manual or a seloc?

If you going to buy a manual, which I suggest. Buy an OEM MERC Manual.
Little pricey but worth every penny. Serial number is a must when buying.
See them on ebay all the time. alot cheaper.
Is this motor a tiller shift?
if yes than look under the carb. you will see the part that needs to be removed.

Thank you, I took the motor into a authorized service center as when I got it started it was pee'ing poorly and figured I might make things worse if I tried to fix it myself on this occasion, I will get a manual and request help of my mechannically inclined nephew before trying this repair myself.
