The boat ran rough last year and foulded plugs. I found out it was the exhaust manifolds which were leaking. It was still running rough this year after replacing the exhaust manifolds and plugs / wires. I ran a compression test and all cylinders were at about 150 PSI except for #5. This cyclinder has no compression.

I have heard that Volvo Penta engines are known for mushroomed valves. How can I be sure this is the problem and how do you remove the head. I have done auto engine repair but I do not see how the intake manifold attaches to the head.

Any help is appreciated, Thank You

Volvo isn't noted for it more than anyone else, it is a Chevy 305, built by GM with GM fuel injection.
A leakdown test will tell you if it's a valve or piston, but with 0 compression, why waste the time, the head has to come off for either one.
