1961 Johnson Fd-15 pull start problem

i have a 18 hp 1961 Johnson fd-15 pull start motor, i took it out two weeks ago, worked great, just recently used it the other day and soon after i had it going it suddenly stopped working...i got it going again and then a few minutes later it quit but this time the pull cord will not budge. any ideas?

Can you turn it over by hand? or with auxiliary rope?

What stopped working? The engine or the pull starter? If it is the pull starter, take it off the engine (3 screws) and then try it manually. There's not much to go wrong with them. If the engine dies then it's totally another problem.
