I have a 140hp mercruiser that runs great on both the low end and the high end but getting between the two can be tricky. My tac doesn't work so I'm guessing that the problem occurs between 1500 and 2000 rpm. The problem occurs when working up the throttle range. Everything will seem fine until I hit that trouble spot. Once I hit it the motor hesitates and either bogs down and dies or eventually gets up to speed with much hesitation. Once I'm passed about 2500-3000 rpm it's back to flawless performance. Linkages are good. Carbs were rebuilt not too long ago. At first I thOught maybe the float may not have been properly set, but it ran fine since that carb job. I had it out of commission for about a month while I redecked the boat and the problem first came after that idle period. Any thoughts?

Sounds like a carb problem. I have seen rebuilt carbs that just don't work. corrosion deep in the small passages that can't be cleaned.
