Do you need flapper valves on Mercruiser engine?

I was told by a Mercruiser Shop that they do not replace flapper valves in standard exhaust anymore. They showed me a bulletin from Volvo-Penta stateing to leave them out as they are more trouble then what there worth. Any opinions? BTW my engine is a Merc 5.0 Carb.

There is also a big difference in how the exhaust is controlled in the drive itself. On Mercruiser, stick with the flappers.

There is no simple way to answer that. Age, saltwater, and overheating is the reason for failure. Replacing them is fairly easy as long as they do not go down the pipe and get jammed.

So the shop is applying Volvo service bulletins to Mercruiser's :eek:

What would you think if you took your Chevy truck into the GM dealer and the service adviser started referencing Dodge service bulletins........ Naw, we don't need to do that to your Chevy, Dodge says so right here :rolleyes:

They are busy because they blow off jobs like yours and take quick turnaround high paying jobs all summer.

yep

find a reputable REPAIR shop that is mercruiser certified, they will take the time and care your boat needs
