Gear shift lever problem on 1964 Johnson Super Seahorse 40 HP

Model RDL - 26 - R.

The gear shift lever that goes through the motor housing has come adrift - it just falls out! And then of course, the boat goes nowhere.... It connects to a linkage/connector inside the motor housing which then goes into the motor (see photo).

It looks like some kind of retainer washer has come off.

Has anyone worked on something similar to this? Are they all the same? How could I remedy it - are spare parts likely to be available or would it be better to measure it up and try to find / make something to fit?

Thank you!

Looking DOWN into the motor - you can see the lever at the bottom going through the housing, then you can see a groove around the section in the housing, then it inserts into a connector in the centre of the photo.

Your motor is a 64 not a 68. I'm thinking there is a pin in there, it may have broke. F_R would know for sure.

Thank you. Yes, it's a '64 (edited post title). I looked for an obvious pin or something to hold the lever but couldn't see anything.

You're missing a washer (305575) and retainer (305582).

The washer is a washer. The retainer is a retainer . I would buy an assortment of retainers at harbor freight and try my luck before I'd dish out 13 bucks for one.

He's in Australia. I doubt they have a Harbor Freight there!

Thanks guys, I'm off to a bearings shop today to ask if they can dig something out for me. I found a piece of the retainer in the housing last night. I couldn't find any evidence of a washer.

Final news - I purchased a sirclip, which might do the job.

Thank you for your advice.

If it fits, it will probably only last for 40 years or so. :)
