The life of a 200 Yamaha 4 - Stroke

I'm looking at buying a used 2003 Triton 2286 with a 200 Yamaha 4 - Stroke. The hours are approximately 900.

This would be my first 4-stroke

Should I be worried about this many hours on a eight year old boat ?

Not about 900hrs, it is like new mechanically, with a car if you have an average speed of 50mph/h, 900 hrs is 45000 miles.
The problem is if it was regularly serviced and freshwater rinsed ?
If you can, remove thermostat and crankcase anodes to see if there is salt and alumina (Al2O3) or not.
Check oil too (no water).

It is hard to make a direct hour-mileage comparison like that. Cars and boats are driven much differently. A lot of boat motors are run wide open for fairly long periods of time, whereas most car motors are rarely wide open. At cruise speed a car is usually less that 1/4 throttle, and a boat is seldom less than 1/2 throttle.

I would not worry too much about 900hrs. I would worry more about how the boat was treated for those 900 hrs. Are you buying it from a private party so you can talk to the owner and get a feel for how he treated it? If he treated it nicely, I would expect there is a lot of life left in it. If it was not taken care of, it may be trashed.

If the engine is well cared for, it should last an indefinate amount of time. Being that this is an internal combustion engine that happens to be operated in a marine environment you can pretty much count on the fact that the engine has been neglected to some extent. If you have happen to look at the OMC board their are people inquiring on engines that are 40+ years old. I would pay to have it checked out and if you really don't want to get burned insist on a leak down test at operational temperature.

Thanks for your input, the guy that owns the boat now(second owner) is very annal about the boat.
The boat and motor both look almost new. I'll test drive it and have my boat mechanic ride along.
