I just replaced the impeller because when I had tested the engine there was no water coming out, (the prop was not on) so I figured replace the impeller, had not run in 4+ years I was told...after installed water came out no problem:D. He had two props & one had a big piece missing out of it. long and short of it I had dropped the lower unit and had a blast putting it back in. Got it back in and anytime I went to start it, would not go out of reverse. so I dropped it all the way to find neutral, twisted the spline goes about 75% of the way all around in a circle but in every spot it stays in reverse. I don't want to spend ton's what's my best way out?

there is a plastic piece that fits the gear that puts the propeller in forward and revers the piece gets worn or you need to line it up to where the spring assisted lock pin is right in the middle of where the slanted part meets the flat part ... if you have the bottom of the motor off print this and take it with you you should see what i am talking about.

The only plastic piece is the reverse lock cam. It has no bearing on shifting. Is the gear lube in good shape? Are you sure it is stuck in reverse?

If so, drop gearcase. Turn lower shift rod clockwise until it stops. Now use adjustable wrench to turn it a bit more CW until it clicks into neutral. Don't force it, but be firm. Now set MerControl to neutral and reinstall gearcase.
