Just purchased what appears to be a nearly brand new 1971 Johnson 6HP.
There is no telltale on these small motors but I see water pushing out of the exhaust port.
What temperature should the block be when running this motor?
What temperature is the thermostat of these motors set to open at?

I noticed the entire block is cool to the touch while running except for a small part on the starboard side is fairly hot (Can keep your fingers on it for +/- 10 seconds)

I want to ensure that I am not going to fry this motor unknowingly while running it and would like to ensure it is operating correctly.

Thanks

The part that gets hot is the exhaust cover.

It's good you can touch the head, etc and not burn your fingers and you seem to have water flow.

The typically run about 130-145*.

If the engine is new to you, I would still replace the water pump impeller and the lower unit lube, with new fill/drain plug seals. All that is about 1/2 hour and $20.00

As always, DJ, gives good sound advice.

Here is an article about your motor that is a good read. Parts for your motor like ignition parts, water pump impeller, carb kit, fuel pump, and more is availabe on this site.

Here is two links for an electronic parts diagram for your motor.

Thanks for the info. I think I will do the water pump just to be sure.

I wanted to attach a picture just to show how clean this motor is. On top of the shape, it was a STEAL at $250.

She will look nice on the back of my Montauk.
