Hello

I have a 95 Mercury outboard motor that is 40 hp and I am having issues getting it to start sometimes. I replaced the battery and last time it occur I removed the motor cover and noticed the starter motor is firing into the flywheel to start the motor. I will try and start and you can see the gear move slighting but won't shoot up to start the motor. Usually after several attempts the starter motor will fire up and start the motor no problem. Do I need to replace the starter motor? PLEASE HELP! I love fishing for bass and if I have to miss another weekend of fishing I will go crazy.

Thank you in advance for your help and have a good one.

Re: Starter motor malfunction?

The shaft needs lubricant for the gear to travel up. If that does not fix it your starter is turning too slow. That could be bad starter, bad connections, bad cables or bad battery.

ONLY lube the shaft any lube into the bendix will cause it to malfunction.

Use lube very sparingly too.

Re: Starter motor malfunction?

Thank you very much for your responses. Can you clarify how you lube just the shaft? Would I have to breakdown the starter motor to get to the shaft? Also could clarify what the bendix is? Sorry for all the questions, as I am purely a fisherman and not a mechanic.

Thanks again for your help and have a good one.

Re: Starter motor malfunction?

The bendix is the gear that goes up to engage the flywheel. Clean that shaft and lightly oil it. You should be able to do it without removing the starter. When done manually turn that gear up and let it go. It should go up smoothly then drop down when you let it go.
