Hi all,

Getting the boat prepped for the summer, one of the things on my to-do list was replacing the bendix on the starter.

I took the starter off, replaced the bendix and reinstalled the starter. I charged the battery, went to start it and all i get is a buzzing or crackling noise coming from the motor, and there was some smoke coming from the positive battery terminal.

Does this sound like there is a short somewhere?

Any tips?

It is a 1989 Johnson 70.

Sounds like a looses connection. Probably a ground. Clean the negative battery terminal at the engine block.

Clean up ALL the battery connections on both the mtr and the battery.

Thanks guys, I'll try that next time I'm at the storage place.
