I have a 2001 Baja with a 6.2L, and the engine only under a load (not out of the water) will surge and lose power for a moment. It is not throwing any codes and will idle all day perfect. The local boat mechanic said it?s probably the IAC value. Does this sound right???

if it idles all day perfect the IAC is NOT the issue

it is called an IDLE air control, it controls air flow at IDLE - your mechanic is misinformed

have you checked the water separator?? fuel vent?? when was the last tune-up performed??

if the dist cap is original it is definitely time for a new one, the factory ones grow cauliflower under em

How do you check the water separator? Dont you just replace the filter? And where is the fuel vent? I recently purchased the boat so no idea when it last had a tune up. But the distributer cap does look old.

Don't discount any of the maintaince items already posted. But don't forget your engine is 10 yrs old! Do a compression test. See whactya got.
Then give more info when you have more questions! SERIAL # helps more than anything!

the water separator is a spin on filter that looks like a standard oil filter usually located on the front STDB side of the engine mounted low in-line with the fuel line

some have a paper cartridge filter that goes into a fuel pump assy

to inspect the filter, remove it and pour contents into a glass jar and look for debris/water

fuel vent line is located on the fuel tank, 5/8" or 3/4" ID fuel line routed either to the fuel fill deck lid or a separate vent through the hull

if there is black spray paint on the base of the distributor cap it is original

Ok I replaced the cap and rotor (looked really bad), water separator, compression check all between 115 120 psi. Took it to the lake today and ran great for about 30 min then started to do the samething. It would keep cutting out for a split second (not stall) and at the same time the alarm under the dash would beep. It seams like it would occur at totally random times, maybe a little worse in rougher water. It will start and idle fine even free rev. perfect. Could this be water in the fuel?

If you were getting the audible beeps when the problem occurred, it should have set an error. Have the ECM error codes read out. Otherwise there is too much guessing what could be the problem as well as wastes time and money.

Follow "burp" recomendation! Very possible the "oil pressure" sender for the PCM or ECM whichever you have, will store a "code".
Have checked your oil? What oil do you use?

Re: Idle Air Control Valve 2001 6.2

I use quicksilver 25W-40 an just changed the oil, I took it to the shop a few weeks ago and no codes came up. But I took the water/fuel separator off and drained it into a glass jar and the gas looked like flat mountain dew, let it sit for a few minutes and water began to collect on the bottom. I will drain the tank and put another water separator on. Water in the fuel has to be the problem! Any thoughts?
