I Just bought a Bennington 22 ft, pontoon boat it has a 2002 Mercury 9.9/15 on it now we are putting boat in the river so needed a larger motor. Just bought a 1979 Mercury 500 50 H.p. Do I have to completely rewire to use this motor. I was told all merc. set ups were universal.....the 500 has a plug the 9.9 does not. Help not sure what to do next.

You may need a full harness. As well, the old motor was a 15" shaft and was probably ok at such a slow speed but the 50 will have to be a 20" shaft.

The only thing those two engines share is the color of the paint-BLACK.

As stated, your 50 should be 20" shaft to work on a toon. I'm sure it is as "shorty's" 15" shaft engines were relatively rare in that hp range.

You need a good used remote control with harness and cables, specific for motors of and around that year. Plug into Ebay and see what's there.
