Hi all,
New to these forums, and have found them very helpful. This being my 1st boat & outboard I?ve found your whole website to be a great resource.
I have searched yet still have some unanswered questions, hopefully someone can help me out.
Engine in question is a 1984 140hp Evinrude. V4.
I?ve been told the engine was replaced before i bought my boat, so assuming the tacho was for the old motor.
1.
The tacho installed looks quite old and will easily rev past the max of 6k rpm before WOT. The dial on the back only has 4 settings. Being 1-2-3-4. Which setting would be correct as I?ve read most tachos have many more settings?? Currently set on 3.
2.
I have been told the WOT for my engine is 5500rpm is this the correct range? As id like to get the tacho working properly and check/replace my prop.
3.
Have also had a good friends brother tell me to advance the timing by 4 degrees, although he said a workshop would advise against this/ not take the risk. He is in the know being an outboard mechanic. Any opinions on this? Are they retarded from stock? What gains or loss if any?
Apologies for any noob questions, being my first boat im having lots of fun and learning plenty. Plan on learning lots more on these forums as well.
Thanks all,
Matt
