I have a 98 Johnson 90 hp outboard (J90TSLECM) and cant get any power to the starter. The starter works when i jump it with cables and the boat will start, so i replaced the solenoid (SW622) but it still gets no power. The battery is a brand new Marine optima with a full charge. I know that before there were two batteries linked in a series (do i need both to run the starter?) all cables and wires look tight and in good condition. Could it be an ignition switch or something like that?
Thanks Guys

One (good quality) marine battery like you have, should be enough. You might get the battery load tested but it sounds more like an ignition switch problem to me.

Not too sure, do I jump the post that comes from the battery?

is your shfter in nuetral??

is the kill laynard clip in place??

you need to keep checking on the ignition circuit for a short . also check the large fuse on the engine

you may have a broken wire someplace

my connection under the floor shorted out and the black/yellow wire burnt( kill circuit) ( I have an adapter in between a new control and an old motor thus the connection is under the floor instead of under the motor cover!!)

good luck

Re: 1998 Johnson Outboard-Trouble getting power to starter

The large posts on the solenoid, one has the cable from the battery and the other side goes to the starter.Take a heavey wire and touch it to each of these posts,That is bypassing the solenoid, if the starter kicks in it may be a bad solenoid or bad connections.Personally I would start by cleaning EVERY elec. connection both battery + and- then both sides of solenoid and the starter also the small connections on the solenoid.Make sure the grounds are clean and good connections. then try the key if it dont work then bypass the solenoid. If the solenoid bypass works and the key dont
then I'd go to the keyed switch.
