I recently posted a thread asking for some advise about a boat i was interested in for a project. I purchased this today for $100. The motor would not turn, so the first thing I did was remove the cylinder head and check the pistons. The pistons and rings appear to be in good shape, and to my amazement they are mobile. I removed the pull start and was able to turn the flywheel about 1 inch. I believe the gearbox is locked in Forward or Reverse because of the inoperable shift lever, and that is what's preventing the motor from turning. I've uploaded pictures, and I'm hoping some of you professional boatsmen would be able to answer a few questions for me.
1. Can you Identify the boat? It doesn't have a title or any markings. I'm just curious.
2. Would the gearbox being locked in gear completely prevent the motor from turning by hand, or could this indicate a serious issue I may run in to?
3. If I remove the cover that's over the lower unit, are there any little springs that will fly out at me? Anything I have to be careful NOT to do while I'm working in there?
4. I found a Serial # and a Model #, but I'm not having much luck finding literature. The numbers are : Model#: 35018 Serial#:01974
5. Isn't there some type of special paint for wooden crafts that will be used in salt water? My main priority is getting the motor running, but I plan to sand and repaint the entire boat, can you recommend the best paint and/or materials to use?
Any advise you can give me on this project is very much appreciated. I've dealt with small fiberglass boats, but this is going to be my biggest (and first outboard) project yet.
