I recently posted a thread asking for some advise about a boat i was interested in for a project. I purchased this today for $100. The motor would not turn, so the first thing I did was remove the cylinder head and check the pistons. The pistons and rings appear to be in good shape, and to my amazement they are mobile. I removed the pull start and was able to turn the flywheel about 1 inch. I believe the gearbox is locked in Forward or Reverse because of the inoperable shift lever, and that is what's preventing the motor from turning. I've uploaded pictures, and I'm hoping some of you professional boatsmen would be able to answer a few questions for me.

1. Can you Identify the boat? It doesn't have a title or any markings. I'm just curious.

2. Would the gearbox being locked in gear completely prevent the motor from turning by hand, or could this indicate a serious issue I may run in to?

3. If I remove the cover that's over the lower unit, are there any little springs that will fly out at me? Anything I have to be careful NOT to do while I'm working in there?

4. I found a Serial # and a Model #, but I'm not having much luck finding literature. The numbers are : Model#: 35018 Serial#:01974

5. Isn't there some type of special paint for wooden crafts that will be used in salt water? My main priority is getting the motor running, but I plan to sand and repaint the entire boat, can you recommend the best paint and/or materials to use?

Any advise you can give me on this project is very much appreciated. I've dealt with small fiberglass boats, but this is going to be my biggest (and first outboard) project yet.

If it is infact a 40, then it's either a 1960 or 61

It is a 1960 40 Horse Evinrude I have no idea what year the boat is but I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same vintage.

Yes the seller just called and said the boat is a 1972 "PIP", at least that's what the individual that sold it to him said. What is a PIP? I searched google, to no avail...

Are you sure it is a 10 foot boat? It seems bigger, and 40 HP would be pretty big for most 10 footers....:)

Ya know I said the same thing... I'm gonna break out a tape measure tommarow and check it myself, it really does seem a lot bigger than 10'!

I'm no expert on the motor that you have, but I can say that the drive being in gear should not stop the motor from turning. It would simply turn the prop along with the motor. Of course this is without any safety lockouts, which I assume are disconnected, since you say the head is off. It may make it a little harder to turn over. However, if it will not turn at all, I would say that the lower unit is locked up for some reason.

Well, I figured out the lower unit is definitely locked up. It will move maybe 1/4" both ways, 1/2" with some force but I didn't want to crank on it until I have a chance to tear it down and figure out how deep this rabbit hole is gonna go. How similar is a lower unit's gear setup to a manual automotive trans? I'm an Auto Tech with some experience with manual trans (hell, I built my own for a mustang I had...) so I don't think it's going to be that difficult. Only thing I'm hopeful for is I will be able to find individual parts if I need them.

I got it off tonight and set up a work space for it. Tomorrow I will be tearing it down. Fingers crossed it's not FUBAR!
