My name is David, new to boating. Don't know much about motors, but bought an 18 year old Maxum with a 75 HP outboard. At slow speed and even medium speed, no problem at all. At full throttle, about 5 minutes in, the motor shuts down. Some think it's overheating somewhere, but not sure. Some suggest ignition module. No one knows for sure. Wouldn't it overheat even at slower speeds? Could use a little help if anyone know what this might be. Thanks, David

vice admiral...talked to my partner and says it's the original motor, but been rebuilt. 1993 I believe. but this problem only happens at top speed or full throttle, never at half speed or idle...thx

It could apply when it gets hot. Does it start right up when it dies or does it cool down then start.

sunfish, it takes about 45 minutes. i will try to start a few times, but never kick over. but if you wait it will start right up and purr like a kitten at about half throttle with absolutley no problems. kinda weird, but i really want to figure this out. thx, davydog

Pump the primer bulb at full throttle. If the motor continues to run, you have a fuel pump issue or a clogged fuel filter. If the primer bulb collapses, you ave a clogged screen in the fuel pickup in the tank or a bad/dirty antisiphon valve.

An ignition problem is less common than a fuel delivery issue.
