My 250 EFI 1999 was running great and stopped, would not turn over. When I looked at my battery compartment it was smoky. The cable got so hot it melted the battery terminal off. The temp Gage read 175 and no beep for overheating, but when I reconnected the cable, it would spark. After letting it cool down I could reconnect the cable, but the motor did not want to turn over like locked up, but it did later on. Can the charging system do this? I looked for a physical short and did not see one. Also can the started stay engaged and do this?:

Thank you

Relay contacts in the starter solenoid can actually weld themselves together keeping the starter engaged and a constant current flowing through it causing the meltdown which would overheat the battery.and in most cases start a fire. You are lucky not to have been swimming home with a cloud of smoke behind you. This is not the only probable cause but it is a surely likely one. I hope your swichbox didn,t fry as well.
