Water leaking from gasket behind shift shaft?

Ok, just got done changing water pump on my 89 mercruiser alpha1. Ran it on the muffs and after changing the thermostat gasket because of a small leak I also noticed a small amount of trickle from the the shift shaft area. It looks as though there is a gasket directly behind it and that might be the culprit. And advice is appreciated.

Are you referring to a leak on the engine or on the drive?
If it's the engine, we are not going to know what gasket on the engine when we don't even know what the engine is?

If on the drive, I believe the only visible shift shaft is the one pictured below.

yes that is the area I'm referring to. Sorry the my lack of terminology. So yeah the leak seems to be coming from the area directly behind the the shifter in the picture you sent.

I'm assuming it is if everything thing else is working. If it wasn't I wouldn't be getting water circulation throughout the motor right?
