I just replaced my water impeller on my 6 hp Mercury and now I'm trying to replace the water impeller on my 175 hp Mercury. I'm in the process of pulling the lower unit off. There is this black tubing that goes up that is keeping me from dropping the lower part. It looks like you can unscrew it at the base.

My question - do you unscrew it or pull it out at the top; if you pull it out at the top how do you reattach? The owners manual does not discuss this step; it shows the tubing on the gear housing diagram. SSN: OG363201, 1996.

Thanks

That's the speedometer tube. There should be a splice just above where it comes out of the hole with the shift shaft. If there isn't one, cut it and put one in. Be sure it's high enough so you can thread the line through before you run out of room as you install the foot.

hope it helps

thanks - there was an existing splice outside that I was able to take apart and drop the lower end.
