Question. I am close to finishing and have decided I like the interior of the boat without the decorative side panels. My father is insisting the panels have some kind of structural significance since below them was a contured hard board on each side. Do I need them or not. I don't have a picture so I was hoping this might be common knowledge. As you can see by the picts. I did replace seats. Carpet and repower to a 72 chrysler 35hp which I hope will pull my kids on a tube. Wife liked it was same color. Any ideas would be helpfull. Also replaced wheel. Added stereo.

I have the same boat. I bought it not knowing the floor was rotten - my first boat and I was easily fooled.
Instead of taking a chainsaw to it...my brother and I refinished it the best we could. The side panels cleaned up nicely and we reused them but talked about taking them off and installing a rod holder. The engine control is mounted to one of them so we would have to get a different type of control or mount it. The panels in mine were not structural more functional and cosmetic - they look nice but also created a shelf behind them that we can put small stuff out of the way.

Here's a picture
