I just bought my first boat, a 1975 16ft fiberglass in great shape. Engine sounded great and ran good at sellers house with earmuffs. First time on the lake had a little trouble starting but eventually fired up and ran fine at idle and low speed when opening throttle out of no wake zone it would just bog down and stall. For the rest of the day it would barely start and stall when I would push warm up lever down. Any ideas guys? I was so excited to have a boat and now I'm bummed!!

1. Test the compression. It should be over 100 psi and within 5-10 psi of each other.

2. If OK, test spark on both cylinders.

3. If OK, you have carburetor issues.

Thanks DJ! We tested the compression and it was good as well as spark, had an issue only runnin one cylinder but fixed that by changing power pack. Took it out again and it would start ok and stay going when warm up lever down but had same issue with bogging down with more throttle. I will check into getting carb rebuilt as I have know skills with engines! Sucks to buy a boat and have problems from day one!

It's not that hard. You have two carburetors.

Buy a manual (Original reprint) and follow the link/sync. procedure carefully.

You can do it!

Would it still be the carb if it runs fine out of the water with the muffs on?

It sounds an awful lot like a vacuum line is cracked.

Check the fuel lines, pump, and filter as well. It might not hurt to do a general "tune up" on the engine while your at it.

Thanks BB! I will check that out! So far I cant find anyone willing to work on it. I guess I'm going to have to stay away from the lake for a while and try to figure this out on my own. Last mechanic I talked to said it has seen it's last days

Just spoke with the guy that sold it to me he said he just replaced the fuel pump a few weeks ago so he didnt think that would be the cause but maybe he didnt do something correctly? He hasnt had it on the lake in a year only with the muffs but said last time on the water it ran smooth all day at wot?

I feel your pain man..I have a boat too that I was ready to get on the water with, but am having to freshen up things here and there....I dont care to dive into the motor honestly, as I find stuff like this exciting, and a challenge...I love to rebuild and work on motors, so its just kind of part of the fun to me. Good luck though!...I am going to rebuild my carbs this week.
