Outdrive compatiablity

I have a 1984 Sea Ray Amberjack with twin 190s, I backed into a wall in the dark, messed up the starboard out drive, for the second time. I came across an older drive
serial#5218929--1.84R. Replaced damaged drive, installed new water pump, and changer the fluid, old fluid looked good but I changed it any way. I am told this drive was made between 1978 to 1982. Have it installed on the boat fit just fine, how here comes the problem. Shift it into foward locks in at the full position except its in reverse. Shirt it to reverse and it is in foward. With both drives shifted in foward the shifters are facing the same direction. Could this be a counter rotating drive? and if so is ther any way to make it work. Some one sugested reversing the shift fork? These drives measure the same demintions except my original drive had a square back and a smooth top, this drive is rounded at the rear and has a lift eye at the top of the drive.

Re: Outdrive compatiablity

Being an MC1, doubtful it a counter, but if the lower was opened up ,this could have been reversed.

not unless someone installed an alpha one counter rotated lower half on an older MC-1 upper

to know for sure you have look at where the shifter on the lower is facing when the remote is in FWD gear at the helm - if it is facing straight fore and aft and the drive is reversing, you have a counter rotated lower

easy to fix - change the throw of the cable at the helm control

or you have a left handed prop on a standard rotation drive

if that were the case, the drive wouldn't shift at all

the shift spool actuator would not turn as it would only lock harder against the stop - (it always rotates fore to aft in a counterclockwise motion looking from the top)

and MC-I drives only have a stop on the port side of the drive, not both

"this drive is rounded at the rear and"

MC1 lower, is rounded . The bottom pic is the normal config. for fwd .shift fully clockwise, the top pic is wrong. turning the shaft clockwise results in reverse gear .
