My thanks to the folks on this site, I have begun swapping out the old 2 bbl rochester to a 4 bbl Merc Weber/carter Edelbrock carb 9600.

The reason for the swap was oil mixing in the antifreeze. There was a leak in the intake manifold gasket. I figured this would be a good time to add a few extra hp.

Most All parts were purchased on ebay motors and was from a used 1996 Merc 4.3xl. The used manifold and carb were in excellent condition.

intake manifold and carburetor: $180.00
Flame arrestor: $30.00
new intake gaskets: $37.00
Shipping $57.00
Total project: $304.00

Project is not complete yet. check out the picks so far.

The few extra HP isn't worth the extra gas.

Well,

the 4BBL is on and running. Here are some final pics. The gasket sufaces cleaned up nicely, no warpping. The new 4bbl mainfold bolted up with some minor grinding. The heads have an angled "lip" where the intake and gasket got hung up. Also, I had to reverse the throttle cable from the control side. beyond that, it was a simple bolt on and go. she fired up after a 2 or three tries. Dwell, timing, carb idle were all adjusted to spec.

I sea trial this weekend.

I am going to do this same swap later on my 4.3l. But my whole block is trashed and will upgrading to a vortec. Good luck on the sea trial.
