engine backfiring

We have a 1992 21 or 22ft Glass stream cutty cabin with a MCM 5.0 liter V8. We are losing power, eventhough the batteries seam to b fully charged, it will back fire and it will not accellerate. You have to back off the throttle a bit to keep going. When this happens you can tell the batteries are DRAINED. Mostly only happens when we run it for 30 mins+ with no noticeable change in the engine temp. Do you have any suggestions on what the problem is? I also need a "break down" on the engine its self. The back of it is so hard to see!! I want to know what is where back there.

How can you tell ?
If the batteries were drained, backing off the throttle doesn't suddenly charge them back up.
Backfires are normally caused by a lean fuel condition.

We carry an extra battery or jump charger, we had some of these issues last year and I thought they were fixed. When running u can see the battery gauge go down, and you can tell by the sound of the engine. Backfire and battery drain happen together, very strange to me. Usually this happens when we r trying to get home, so we have never stopped to see if it would charge the battery.
