How do I check my Stator?

I have a 1986 90 horse evenrude model #E90TLCDC, and it is not charging, I crimped new terminals on the battery cables, with wing nuts and lock washers, and still no change. I also tried a new battery. I want to look to the Rectifier/Regulator, but I need to know if the Stator is good before I replace the rectifier/regulator. If anyone knows a good way to check the stator that would be great. Thank you.

Re: How do I check my Stator?

There are two tests for the stator listed in the factory service manual. If you don't have one, it's highly recommended for all ignition testing. It lists both an ohms test and a voltage test for the stator. The voltage test works well. A special "peak reading" voltmeter is required to obtain the correct reading. Measured between the A and B output on both legs of the stator, you should measure at least 150 volts when cranking at approx 250 rpm.

There're no output tests for the battery charging side of the stator (yellow wires). You only check them with an ohmmeter. You use the peak reading for checking the ignition side of the stator.

I think that 150V relates to the ignition side not the battery charging side of the stator.
Yellow and yellow/grey 0.7 Ohms +-0.05 Ohms between them and no shorts to earth.
Disconnect them from the terminal strip before testing.

You're a wise man boobie. LOL
BTW those numbers I quoted are for a 9 Amp stator.

The op said regulator/rectifier so one could assume (bad word) that he has a 9 amp stator and your specs are correct.

Re: How do I check my Stator?

I did misread your question. The factory manual lists another test for the output of the charging side of the stator. Disconnect the battery. Remove the rectifier red lead from the terminal board OR the rectifier/regulator red lead from the battery side of the starter solenoid. Wire a 0 to 40 amp ammeter in series, in either of the above circuits. Reconnect the battery cables to a battery that is not fully charged. When running the engine at 4500, it should output the amps that are the stated capacity of your charging stator (6 amps, 9 amps, etc.)
