hey, i recently posted about my '96 johnson 112 spl with a bad cylinder and im trying to determine all my options. i came across a cheap 1994 Evinrude 140 with a bad lower unit..i was thinking of swapping my 112 out with this 140 head. the v-4 johnson/evinrude power heads look alot alike. Can this swap be done without huge modification? is it worth doing? thanks

I don't think the 140 Power head will fit your outboard. However your lower unit should bolt right on to the 140 and that is a far easier swap.

Yep. The only difference between the Johnsons and Evinrudes back then was the paint color. It wasn't until the Fichts that they started making differences between the two lines and that continued under BRPs control.

ok good. do you think there would be any 'noticable' perfromance difference between a 112 and a 140 on a
19' boat? considering they are both v4's, i'm assuming the 140 is a higher compression motor? would that make it less reliable in any way? thanks!

You will see better performance out of the hole and a little more top end. They are both good reliable motors. If you are planning on using the VRO just make sure she is getting oil and the water pump works. Make sure you get the controls with the 140 I believe the wiring harness for the controls is different as OMC made the changes to the wiring harness in either 95 or 96.

ok, last question..i'm going to bring my compression tester when i go look at the motor. what would be considered a good reading for this 140? i think i read somewhere that the 140 should be higher psi than a 112 or 120 v4 johnson/evinrude.. also is there anything else specific i can look for on this powerhead? the motor is a '94 but i'm still hoping to get some years out of it..thanks again for your help!
