Re: which starcraft

What size are you looking for? If you are looking for a large cuddy, both the Chieftains and Islanders are quite popular and handle nicely. The open SS's are a bit less of a project.

The V5 hulls have more deadrise(deeper V) and two extra chines on each side than the regular ones.

They are kinda rare, mostly seen in 22' SS or 22' Islander hulls.

I knew I should have put length in that post,I would really like to have an 18 footer, but a 16 would be ok,because they are easier to handle in small lakes.I dont want a cuddy cabin, but I will want to fish the BIG C,(Columbia river)so its got to be deep to handle the swells.Maybe its impossible to combine a good lake boat and a river boat in one. I really like the new SC boats just dont have the 30k to blow on one.

Open bow, 18 footer you say? Well, looks like the Super Sport crew gets another one! Mariner would foot the bill if you can find one.

Happy hunting!

Ok, does it have to be an open bow? What do you want to spend on said boat? You want to fish the Columbia, so where are you at?

This is ugly but might be able to get it for a good price.

A little more spendy

And another here.

I don't know where you live but these places are along the Columbia or close to it. Yea I know that the Columbia River is a long one and covers a lot of area. But one might be worth the drive as these tin boats don't come cheap around here that is for sure.

yeah i looked at those, but wasnt sure if they were deep enough.I think I want a later model because they have a wider beam ,even starting in the 80s,someone correct me if im wrong.and I keep reading all these threads from back east where they aren't paying hardly anything for these boats even less than scrap prices. Why are they so expensive out here.
I origanally wanted something I could cross the bar with and still be good in the resevoirs and lakes.I was told the midwest boats wouldnt work because the transom and splashwells were too low for the ocean. He said a sneaker would sink me.I do know I crossed the bar in my 19 ft bayliner bowrider, but it was on days you could almost ski over the bar,and the ocean was flat. Now im trying to buy a home on the oregon /idaho border or maybe W.idaho so maybe I dont need as deep a V as I thought

Hmmmmmm, crossing the bar as you know can be very tricky at times and not even possible at others:eek:. You are wanting a boat that will work anywhere and I do not believe that there is such a thing. But then again I may be wrong, have been before and will be again. Just ask my wife and she will tell you so:facepalm:. If you want something to cross the bar with I would be looking for something in the 22 ft range, most of which are cabin boats:D. I just don't think that you are going to find something that is going to cross the bar and work really well on a small lake. Not trying to be a drag here and there may be others that disagree with me and that is fine as there are many others on here with much more knowledge than what I have. Good luck in your search my friend.

Re: which starcraft

Right,I know im not crossing the bar in any kind of bad weather, and I really didnt think there was a perfect boat for all things but that was just what I wanted, and try and come as close to that as possible

thats why I was asking about which model had the deepest V and the widest beam, not what was for sale

Deepest V, widest beam, open bow, at 18?

I think they made an 18' SS V5 didn't they?

Yes Sir,
I see they only made it in 1979,unless they changed the name according to NADA,thats all they have listed in the 18'er so I f I could find one close to Oregon that would be a good start. 18' V5 Super Sport is the ticket

Thanks

I don't really have a budget, but I think that boat is over priced and under powerd. There are several 17'ers,of the same year and model with a 115 hp,plus I dont want a center console. However,I did not realize they made the really deep V boats after 1980,thats good to know. Many more choices. Thanks
