I did the water pump on my 1985 Mercury 200hp BlackMax, which went well. I put the lower unit back on and ran the engine. Ran well and put in foward and reverse in the drive way work fine. Put the boat in the water yesterday and th engine just grinded in reverse no power no reverse. Foward and neutral worked fine. What did I do wrong????

Thanks for the reply, Cables are locked in and good. It seems to definatly be something with the way I put the lower unit back in. The lower unit slid back together with out a problem and foward and neutral are good. It even goes in reverse in the drive way hooked up to the hose, but when it is in the water with pressure on it to move the water its like slipping and grinding. In reading some forums people are saying to have the engine in fowad when removing and installing the lower unit. I had it in neutral the wholw time does that make the differnce???

With the shifter in the center detent, unhook the shift cable at the engine. Manually move the shift lever in the engine till it's seated in the neutral detent. Then adjust the cable by turning the cable anchor part till it drops into the retainer without any force either way.

If you still have trouble, it's LU trouble.

hope it helps
