ignition problems with 120 merc

no spark, first question- can you start the engine with out the outdrive on. second question the the interlock switch need to be engaged or disengaged for the boat to start, third question the ground wires from the batttery go to the block do any need to go to the transom.

My guess would be bad points.

Yes, but you have to put the drive down, and use muffs with water to the drive for engine cooling.

second question the the interlock switch need to be engaged or disengaged for the boat to start,

It has a neutral safety switch in the control so it will only start in neutral.

third question the ground wires from the batttery go to the block do any need to go to the transom.

It's supposed to go to the engine, the transom is wood.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard...

#1, Yes, just feed water to the motor though...

#2, If you mean the shift switch, it should always be open, except when shifting into neutral, in the water...

#3, Battery ground goes to the block, there are other continuity straps tying to the rest of the drive...

#4, Check the Points, for the lack of Fire issue..
