Hi,

I have a 21 seastriper with 225 merc saltwater series with about 220 hours.

Last fall the oil resevour was low and it beep as I came off plane and approached the launch ramp to haul out.

Just launched. Periodically it beeps. So for example I was out this morning for about 20 mins, no beep, then it happened twice in a row (about 2 mins apart).

Oil res is full. Blue smoke comes out.

I have read that the sensor are very sensitive and this could happen coming off plane....but mine has also happened at idle.

Also read that the alarm brains are prone to failure.

Any suggestions are welcome to trouble shoot.

Thanks!

Did it alarm to where you had to shut off the engine and restart, or did it beep a bit and go away on it's own.?

Hi, it does the triple beep and stops beeping on its own. I was running for idle for 10-15 mins to get out on the lake, on the lake for 15 minutes at 2800 rpm, just as I was approaching the inlet to come back in got the triple beep then again after about 5 mins when idling back.

So here is what I have found:

Checked on the on engine resouvier and it is full to about 1.5" of the top. The float has about 3/4" range until it trigger.

Opened the cap and ran the boat to purge any air.

Oil level after 30 minutes was solid the same.

I assume the tank feeds the motor from the bottom. and the top line is some sort of overflow/vent? At the bottom of the top line there is a brass fitting with a T. One end is open and not connected to anything??

That was the problem. The tank is supposed to be full to overflowing at all times. If, for some reason it quits getting oil from the boat tank and begins to draw down, the alarm will come on, at first with a few beeps when you hit a wave, then soon an incessant beeping. That tells you that you have 1/2 hour of oil to get off the lake.

The T fitting is a relief valve. If the boat tank line is pinched or plugged, and the vacuum on it exceeds 2 psi, that valve opens letting atmosphere in so the pump can pull the oil out of the engine tank.

If you know why the engine tank was low, you're good to go. If you don't you need to troubleshoot the problem. Might just be a battery got on top of the oil line.

hope it helps
John
