I am going to purchase a 24v trolling motor for my 18 ft sylvan, I know that I need two batteries, but I was wondering if that means I should use two batteries along with my primary battery, or will one additional battery (only average size) and the primary battery be enough to power the boat for a decent days with of trolling? My current battery is not powering anything except the standard things.. starting, gauges pumps etc.

You'll need 2 new trolling motor batteries wired in series for 24V. I recommend Cabela's AGM batteries

My sylvan is pretty heavy, I think I'd need 70 pounds of thrust, MinnKota's max thrust with a 12v system is 55lbs. Would 55 be sufficient for a 18ft v hull aluminum sylvan? 90 horse merc on the back

55lb thrust will move it depending on what your goals are, light wind bass fishing less than 8 hours, if you deal with more than that.............

You'll need 24V system for a deep V-hull 18' boat in anything other than flat water, no wind, perfect days. If you push the limits 80 lb Terrova is what you want

The best Idea would be two batteries for the 24v motor, But you can make it work by just adding one more battery (not reccomended)

Two batts for sure. I've done alot of research and people recommend Walmart batts for the money. Keep your reciept for the warranty. Another reason to run seperate batteries is, if you use a fish finder you will get interference if it is hooked up to trolling battery.
