Have two jugs scored and am going to bore to 030 I hope. What is the piston to cylinder clearance. I have a clymer book and it just says go 030 over stock. Allso are siera parts any good or should a guy stay with evinrude. Looking like about 1500 bucks for pistons and gaskets and bearings and boring, should a guy replace reeds??? Also my book does not tell me max rpm for this motor...does anyone know what it should be so I make sure it is not over-reving. And I am removing the vro----is there a fuel pump that will replace the whole unit...broke part of the old vro when removing it. THANK YOU for any help...

When you have the block bored, the machinist may be able to help you with the boring specs. Personally, I wouldn't tackle this job armed with a Clymer manual-get a factory service manual from the original publisher, Ken Cook Co., in Milwaukee: OUTBOARDBOOKS.COM It has all the specs and pictures to help you in your rebuild. I'd stay with original factory pistons (.030)-that way you know the expansion rates of the two new pistons will match that of the other two. Usually the reeds do not need to be replaced, unless they are the reason for the failure. When that engine has completed it's break-in, you should prop it to run 5700-5800 rpm at top end-it's a high performance engine. Make sure you determine the cause of the failure before you start it up after overhaul.

Dump the Clymer manual !!!! unless you are low on toilet paper !!!! :D
Get an OEM manual as already suggested.
Check the "Top Secret Files" at the top of page 1 of this section for info on removing the VRO pump and changing to pre-mix.

Re: Need advice on rebuilding a 89 110 evinrude

When I rebuilt my '96 88SPL last year, I went with aftermarket piston kits. According to the machine shop and the piston factory tech, as long as the machinist bores the cylinders to the correct oversize specs, piston clearance is irrelevant. If you bore to .030" over, then your diameter should be 3.530". Use .030" over Piston kits. I was also warned not to use Forged piston due to the hardness of the metal. Use cast aluminum pistons.

Be careful about following tolerances in old OMC manuals. Modern day ethanol fuel burns hotter than older fuels, making piston/ring expansion different. My rebuild turned out great. My 2c....

I know first hand the cost of using cheap parts if they fail, I also have seen name brand bring a unreal premium. I will order a good manual, Thanks for the heads up. Where is the best Least expencive place to purchase bearings and pistons, rings, wrist pins, ect....and does a power head gasket kit include most everything needed or do you have any suggestions on what all to order to keep waiting to a minimum. Also live in Spokane so any recommondation on a good bore shop close by. THANK YOU SO MUCH....

I used a shop in Florida called Powerhead Exchange. I shipped my engine block to them, they bored it to spec and shipped it back with a complete rebuild kit. If you ship your block, strip it bare, be sure to remove the 4 long studs on the bottom, the bypass covers, lift bracket and water passage cover on top. They can give instructions on how to ship. Very nice and helpful folks.

Fun project...take your time and pay attention to the details.

Mar-fab is now selling on Ebay and you can buy at $45 a hole for machining...

Not sure I'm happy that they are competing with us commercial account guys, but they will do it right and you need ZERO knowledge.

You need to keep shopping if you're at $1500 for parts and boring. At that price you're in the ballpark for a Quality reman powerhead with a warranty.

Boatsdotnet for OEM parts and Ebay often has short money factory service manual for your SPECIFIC year OMC outboard.

Re: Need advice on rebuilding a 89 110 evinrude

what part of the cavity and what are you looking for. My boat has a water pressure gauge, but does not have a tell tale which as I understand after reading this forum, helps to bleed out a air pocket that can form. I am thinking a tell tale port higher on the block may be in order. is this waht you are looking for???? I will get some pic's up shortly if I can figure out how. I am still trying to figure out what fuel pump to use now that my vro pump is broke.....I read the sticky but the link for what pump to use does not work. Is it the 88 pump????
