my wife and i are getting our first boat, from our father in law. and we are looking for a outboard motor for it, we would like to get atleast a 115 horse motor or bigger. all we can find is used motors that has collapsed cyclinders are these worth fixing or should we stay away from them?

Where are you looking? If your mechanically inclined it could be very much in your favor to repair it. A year of the motors would help also, the newer 1980 are a little easier as they have the ADI ignitions.

you can find a good running late 80s or early 90s motor around here for $1200-1500..and late 90s to early 2000s will be in the $2k range...A friend of mine picked up a 1995 115 last year for $800, that needed a new rectifier/regulator...now it runs great with less than $1K total investment..it is for sale if you are anywhere near Savannah GA

I voted yes, i think i should have voted depends... as in depends on if you can do the work yourself competently or have to pay someone to do it for you.

you have to look at who is asking the question...I am sure darryl is a great guy..but he does not seem to have the mechanical knowledge to do a rebuild with out lots of mistakes and do overs..and he seems mostly concerned about total cost..I can buy a good used runnning motor cheaper than you can rebuild a motor even if someone gave him the motor for free...
