Gas tank Main/Aux question 98 Sunbird Neptune

Just bought a 98 Sunbird Neptune 212WA. Real basic question regarding the gas tank(s). There is a main/aux toggle switch on the dash. When I fill the tank, does gas automatically fill into the "aux" tank as well? Is this a safety feature so that running out on Main still allows you to switch to Aux to get home?
