Fuel delivery issue

I did post this before, not nobody replied. I think I am either getting too much fuel or not enough. There is a small crack on top of the fuel tank. Does that matter? When I try and start my motor(1964 Johnson 75 hp) it just back fires sometimes, it wants to start.

i would not think that it would be a factor in terms of running, as the tanks are vented anyway to allow air in/out. the carb is adjusting that fuel/air ratio at the motor, so may need to look into that for issues

Sounds like you need to check the spark timing. Maybe your's is too advanced, hence the backfire?
