I have a 1991 50 horse Merc outboard. Electric start and steering column. I have just had the water pump, thermostat replaced. I took the boat out today and it idles and purrs great however, when pushing the throttle all the way down, it sounds like it is not reaching full RPM. I was only able to get up to about 13 mph. Any suggestions before I take it to the shop?

Was it running ok before repair? If so check to see if maybe a plug wire got knocked off. This should be the 3 cylinder model and it will idle fine on 2 cylinders. If it has set for quite a while do a basic check of the fuel, spark and compression.

It was/ is running great after I took it in to have the water pump replaced (grand father had it stuck on a mud bar a year ago) and thermostat replaced. It runs smooth, no sputtering, smoke, or rainbows behind the motor and can push the 16' starcraft nice. It just seems like it should be running at a higher RPM with more speed.

I had the Mercury dealer go through the motor and do a check on the whole thing because it did sit for a year. Prior to me getting it and having it worked on, it was worse. The boat would not even plane out even with the trim.
