New boat & boater; '69 Glasspar Charger (20'), OMC drive? Where does one find the serial #; on the drive somewhere, I presume? I have the Glasspar boat ID, but I don't think that's applicable in this case?
Owner claims engine is 5.7 litre, son-in-law checking #'s. Weren't the 5.0's the top OMC available? If this is correct, then the motor has been swapped. Attached picture has manifolds off for a gasket repair, raw water cooling.
Ideas on 5.0/5.7 "double hump' heads (2.02" valves). Can anyone ID the drive?

Thanks

Ayuh,... You have a Stringer drive...

Both the 305, 'n the 350 were used, but it probably has been swapped sometime over the last 40 years...
The original was blue, not Chevy Orange...

you have got yerself an OMC Sterndrive, more commonly know as a "stringer" drive

they quit making them in 1985 and fewer people are working on em every day, not that there are alot of folks workin on em anyways

the engine there is NOT painted a factory color, they were light blue so somebody has done someting to it, dunno as far as CID

if you post in the OMC sterndrive forum you may get more info - some folks here run em and love em and know A LOT about em

Thanks, Bond-o. Using that info, are they problematic? The boat appears to be in good shape and we have $1600 into it. If need be, could the drive be upgraded rather than pouring money into an antiquated unit?

Nope, not without replacing everything from the pulleys to the prop, 'n doin' abunch of glassing in the hull....

Personally, the Best you can do it Sell it while it's runnin', 'n put yer money into a Mercruiser, or Volvo powered boat...

agree 100%

seeing as how this is your first boat, dealing with all the stuff associated with these packages, limited parts availability, knowledgable people, etc... - it may turn you off of boating

you would be much much much better off having a mercruiser or volvo powered boat for a first one
