The old gap is .30
should I use that?

Not sure what you mean.
If you mean that you are R&R points, and measured the gap on the old points and it was 0.030", the answer is no. That is normal wear on the heel that has opened up the gap.

I have never run into an OMC with points that was not spec'd at 0.020"...actually make that an OMC with magneto ignition.

If you mean that there is something on the flywheel or engine somewhere that says ' set points to 0.030" '...of course go with that...I am speaking from my experience only.....I sure haven't seen them all...:)

Thanks Tim.
Will the new points at .020 make the engine run better?

Not to bud in on Tim here, but you are replacing those points correct, not just regapping them? When you do ensure they are EXTREMELY clean, no fingerprints, etc. Dont use sanpaper on them either, it wont file them square, and you wont get good spark. It also leaves grit on the points, disturbing contact. Points file only or replace. I clean mine with acetone after Im done adjusting, and test with a meter to guarantee they are opening and closing when they should. If you want help with this, and have access to a meter, let us know.

As far as will it run better, heck ya. ;)

Thanks Tim.

Definitely, if 0.020" is the correct value, and they were 10 thou over that. Cleaner spark, easier starting, better fuel economy, smoother running as related benefits.

As I said, I THINK it should be .020, but there are some folks on here who can say "it is ___".

The old gap is .30

the plugs should have a .030" gap but the points should be .020" Old time mechanics may remember being taught at the factory training schools that new points should be set at .022" as the rubbing block will "wear in" and they will be at .020" after a few hours of running.
