Never bought a boat in Australia, but around here it would be way over priced.

Re: My first boat.

regardless of the exchange rate, I know from family I have in Aus that many things cost way more there, so no one here in USA can advise you as to price (tell us how much one pays for a 4 year old Toyota Corolla).
As for the first boat for general purpose, you want a 19' center console with bow seating and an outboard. Look at the set-up on a Sea Hunt on its web site to get an idea. Best boat for taking 2-3 of your mates, an eskey of tinnies, put a little cream on the beak and off for fishing. Or pack that bow deck with a passle of sheila's and a cask of good Barossa white. Fair dinkum.

I agree with Home Cookin', I know we get people from Aus. that have made it very clear that its sometimes cheaper to buy a boat in America and then ship it to Aus. which sounded idiotic but low and behold it was. Have to be in their shoes I guess, Steven please make sure you go through the entire process when you find your boat, check it out completely and make darn sure you have the right boat, when your toy costs this much you better make sure you are buying a winner. The boat you posted is probably worth less then half that here in the US, with your budget you may very well be in the market to purchase a much better boat and have it shipped as others have done.....

Re: My first boat.

Just my opinion, but if you're looking for a pleasure/fishing boat, get one with snap in/out carpeting. There are plenty of people on this site which favor "carpeting vs. no carpeting", but if you're our cruising and day running, the covered flooring is nice on the feet. If you want to ski, and especially fish, the last thing you want is wet, bloody carpet in the boat.

Look into center consoles, dual consoles, and walk-around cuddy cabins. No one can tell you what is the right boat for you. Look at each model and determine if it will fit into your plans. When you find the perfect boat, you'll know it.
