I got a nasty looking steering arm really thin and rusted up top and I kinda dont even want to touch the bottom, new price is yikes $700 and I've heard that you gotta remove the powerhead to replace it. Question is are they available used and if so is it worth the work to replace it? Any advice is appreciated.

Major dissassembly to get this removed. Have you looked at exploded diagrams at evinrude parts.com Are you talking about item number 7 in diagram for mid section? Yes powerhead must come off.

Yep Lucky number 7 it is. Motor looks to be in great shape other than this. Not much corrosion any where else. Any idea of where to get a used #7?

I cant see the lower part of the arm but the bolt #13 is super rusty. The top of the arm that attaches to the power head is super super corroded. There is 1/8" play in the mounting bracket #12. So it the top of the arm steel and the lower part aluminum?

The #7 is cast aluminum arm attached to a steel "pipe" that is threaded on the other end to nut #13. Is #12 moving or just #7. There may be a bearing in #12 that can be serviced but I am guessing.

Yeah the guy at the parts counter today said that there is a bearing pressed into #12 and if I can get the number off of the bearing maybe a bearing shop can find it but it is only available as a unit from OMC, at a couple hundred bucks. Its hard to tell that the top of the arm is aluminum as it is really really corroded. Think i just found one on Ebay, thanks for the tip.

I will have to take surrenders word on that. It looked like it would have to come out the top. Sorry for misinformation.

+1: no need to remove powerhead. If you have a 20" shaft there is a guy on "Western Massachusetts" craigslist that has a midsection minus the power trim and brackets. He has an ad for a PT&T and a seperate ad for the lower unit, posted on 4/29/11. He'll let it go very cheap - I believe he's expecting to toss it. Can't speak of condition.

Re: 1986 evinrude 120 stering arm assy. Help

I looked on the Evinrude site and did not see steering parts maybe I'm looking in the wrong area or they do not have it. I need the part that connects the steering ram to the motor. Its a round bar with a small turn down. the turn down part goes on to the steering ram and the other end is threaded for adjusting. My motor turns one way all the way but when the ram moves in all the way the motor is not turned very far. It looks like I needed a longer rod but not sure.
