NEW KID ON THE BLOCK, GLAD I FOUND YA. NEED SOME HELP WITH MY 1989 CLASSIC 50 45 HP , 4 CYC AND TWO CARBS.SHE WILL CRANK GREAT, IDLE AND TROLL ALL DAY, BUT WHEN I DECIDE TO GIVE THE GAS IT WILL TRY AND GO BUT WILL BOG DOWN TO ALMOST AN IDLE WITH THE THROTTLE WIDE OPEN AND WILL NOT GET OVER 6 MPH.HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM LAST YEAR TOOOK IT TO A MERC MECH, SAID ELETRONICS CHECKED GOOD, MUST BE IN CARBS OR JUEL SYSTEM. SO I REMOVED TANKC CLEANED , FOUND SEVERAL SMALL HOLES IN FUEL LINE SO REPOLACED LINE AND PRIMER BULB AND DISCONNECT, NEW GAS WITH SYNTHHTEC CONDITIONER SHE CRANKED RIGHT UP AND RAN GREAT FOR ABOUT 5 TRIPS, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN SHE STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN,STILL NEW LINE CLEAN TANK AND FILTER, FUEL PUMP STAYING UP WITH RPM AND NO WATER IN GAS, COULD THIS BE A TRIGGER COIL,HARD TO BELEIVE BOTH CARB HIGH SPEED JETS CLOGGED, I HAVE HEARD THIS YEAR MERCS ARE ELECTRONIC NIGHTMARES JUST DO NOT KNOW ENOUGH TO MAKE A GOOD FIX, ANY IDEAS WOULD GREATELY BE APPRECIATED

If it idles nice there is a very good possibility that your carbs are actually too lean and you are starving the mid range circuit in the carb. When you crack the throttle the idle circuit must have enough fuel in it to get the revs up so the carb can pull fuel. Sort of the same as an accelerator pump in a carburetor equipped car. If the pump is not working the engine will stumble on acceleration.
Back to your boat...try turning the needle valves out one half turn on each carb. Just as a test. See if it acts differently. Since we cannot sit in the boat with you your explanation of what is happening is very important.

pump ur bulb untill rock hard and keep pumping see if gas is running out the face of the carbs , im thinking u got chunks of rubber in ur needle seats from ethonol/ messing with new gas lines and a good way to see if u r too lead backem off a half and run it on the trailer at the launch go half throttle with it

NO NO NO, All that forcing fuel in is going to do is force the needles open and flood the carbs, all it needs to do is prime the fuel pump and fill the carbs up, when the ball starts to get firm at all then you stop. You would be surprised how much pressure squeezing a bulb that hard can have on the system.

;)FLOOD THE CARB, LOL BIG DEAL THEN U KNOW SOMETHINGS WRONG, gas shouldnt come out the front after shes prime if the seats r clean and free of debris and rubber chunks from the fuel line he said he change witch ive seen at least 20 time someone changes fuel lines and allofsudden stuck needle seats, and if alittle squeezeis stressfull on my merc i wouldnt own it and they wouldnt be in business

I've seen several outboards flooded by pumping the bulb hard, it can make MUCH more pressure than the engine pump and overcome the float needle. I measured one once and we pinned our 15 psi pressure gauge. "fuel pump staying up with rpm"--what does that mean exactly? And there's no need to shout with the caps lock on;)

Had the same type of problem and I took mine to the Marine Service Center , Called the yesterday to see what the progress was and they waiting on parts but said it was the carbs, doing a rebuild on them, I should know for sure by Monday . That's when I'm supposed to get it back.

u cant read dude and no u havent seen a outboard flood out if the engines not runninng theres no way to flood the motor unless its laying on its back, and about u reading and understanding a post before u run ur mouth, he said flood the carb im pretty sure u want the float bowl full so thats a flooded carb in my eyes DUDE, and if there is chunks in his needle seats the carbs will be leaking before its gets hard 9 times out of ten, theres no way to over come the needle unless its bad or compromised, like i said before i dont mean jump up and down on the bulb after its hard, dandies

With all due respect Mr. Big,
The needle and seat can hold back about 7 lbs of fuel pressure. It's pretty easy to get 10 -15 lbs on a primer bulb with a white knuckle grip. That easily overcomes the needle valves in the carbs. It doesn't prove anything other than the squeezer is a strong moron.

If the needle valves have debris in them, then normal relatively gentle priming pressure will cause them to visibly flood the carb.

The problem of old fuel lines shedding their inner tube into the fuel system is very real, especially with older lines and our modern poor fuel. You need to replace all lines and clean the carbs and fuel pump to effect a repair if it happens.
